Chen’s work addresses the test-oracle problem: software can be wrong even when a conventional expected-output test is hard to write. Metamorphic testing gives engineers another way to reveal inconsistencies. His current research extends this foundational method, with credit shared among its originators and subsequent collaborators. Co-authored cybersecurity research documented previously unknown compiler and obfuscator bugs, showing the method finding real defects beyond its original formulation.
