Why Tingmin Wu is in the Luvo 100
Tingmin brings a focus on people’s understanding of security to tools for software design and development. ThreatModelling-GPT supports threat analysis in financial services, while SAFE makes vulnerability-detection research code available for others to reproduce. These contributions matter to software quality because identifying security risks and making analysis understandable help teams make better-informed engineering decisions.
About
Tingmin Wu is a Senior Research Scientist at CSIRO Data61, investigating how people understand and use security information alongside AI-assisted security analysis. Following a PhD in Computer Science (Cybersecurity) from Swinburne University of Technology in 2020 and a research fellowship at Monash University, Tingmin joined CSIRO in 2022. Published work examines how people comprehend security language and privacy policies, as well as the use of visualisation to help practitioners analyse Android applications.
At CSIRO, Tingmin co-led ThreatModelling-GPT, which uses language models to identify potential security threats during software design. Developed for financial services in partnership with the Cybersecurity CRC and National Australia Bank, the project received a 2025 NSW iAwards Merit Award. Additional contributions include co-authoring SAFE, an open research implementation for detecting software vulnerabilities using machine learning, bridging academic findings with practical engineering decisions while publishing code for community reproduction.
Beyond software tooling, Tingmin collaborates with government and industry partners to encourage the adoption of security technologies that practitioners can readily understand and audit. Active service on conference programme committees and journal peer-review panels further supports the broader cybersecurity research community.
