Tim helped make cloud load testing accessible to small teams through Flood IO, reducing the need to manage dedicated testing infrastructure. Ruby JMeter and Flood Element gave testers ways to describe performance tests and simulate browser interactions. Practical teaching also helped testing and engineering teams understand how to assess application performance under load.

Tim Koopmans is Senior Director of Product Experience at ScyllaDB and the founder of the load-testing platform Flood IO. Based in Australia, Tim spent more than ten years as a performance and development consultant across retail, finance, telecoms and government, preceded by a decade of service as an Australian Army officer. Flood IO was established in Melbourne in 2013 and acquired by Tricentis in 2017.

The platform helped teams evaluate application behaviour under heavy traffic by executing tests across cloud infrastructure without the burden of managing dedicated servers. Tim developed Ruby JMeter, a tool for writing performance test plans in Ruby, and led Flood Element, an open-source tool simulating user interactions through Chrome browsers to link load tests directly to front-end activity.

Tim also shared practical guidance with the wider engineering community, including the 2018 webinar “A Simpler Approach to Load Testing for DevOps” on browser-based testing workflows. Flood IO was subsequently discontinued in June 2024.
