Why Tim Hudson is in the Luvo 100

Tim helped create SSLeay, the security toolkit that became the foundation of OpenSSL, and continues to contribute through engineering and organisational leadership. Application developers use OpenSSL to protect communications across connected systems. This combination of foundational open-source work and ongoing stewardship supports software quality where many products depend on the same security infrastructure.

About

Tim Hudson is President of OpenSSL Corporation and CTO and Technical Director at Cryptsoft, based in Brisbane, Australia. Serving as a director and member of OpenSSL Corporation, Tim combines cryptographic software engineering with the stewardship of an open-source project used across internet infrastructure, providing shared code that application developers use to protect connections.

The foundations began with SSLeay, a free, portable security toolkit created with Eric Young that became the predecessor of OpenSSL. After studying computer science at the University of Queensland, Tim worked at Brisbane software and services company Mincom on the move from mainframes to smaller systems. A need to secure internet communications, alongside restrictions on licensing strong encryption from the United States, prompted the collaboration. Reliable software quality across the web depends on robust shared infrastructure, supported by ongoing engineering alongside the many developers who build and review OpenSSL.
