Rashina makes the human and organisational dimensions of software quality easier to examine. The co-authored study of 22 AI practitioners offers a framework and recommendations for practitioners and companies navigating fairness in development. By connecting practitioners’ understanding with challenges, consequences and strategies, the work helps teams question decisions that could introduce bias or undermine trust.

Rashina Hoda is Professor of Software Engineering at Monash University in Australia, researching how people, organisations and technology interact across software engineering, artificial intelligence and digital health. Doctoral research at Victoria University of Wellington examined self-organising agile teams, connecting everyday engineering practice with questions about responsible software development.

Rashina co-authored Navigating Fairness, an investigation based on interviews with 22 AI practitioners examining how teams understand fairness, the challenges of creating fair artificial intelligence and machine-learning systems, and the consequences of unfair outcomes. The resulting framework links those perspectives with practical strategies, giving development teams a structured way to scrutinise design decisions.

In 2024, Rashina published Qualitative Research with Socio-Technical Grounded Theory with Springer, presenting a method for developing explanations from research evidence while considering people and technology together. Mentoring women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics was recognised with the Guiding Star Mentorship Award at the 2024 Women of Colour in STEM Awards.
