Rahul Gopinath

Rahul combines research into the credibility of software testing measures with practical education through The Fuzzing Book. The book supports students, educators and developers with executable examples of automated test generation. Research on injected faults and remaining bugs addresses a complementary need: understanding what testing evidence can, and cannot, tell engineers about software reliability.

Rahul Gopinath is a Lecturer in Software Engineering at the University of Sydney, researching software reliability with a particular focus on security-critical systems. After completing a PhD at Oregon State University in 2017, postdoctoral research followed at the CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security in Germany, examining how much confidence testing can genuinely provide that software will operate without failure.

Focusing on fuzzing and mutation analysis, Rahul investigates whether testing metrics can reliably estimate how many undiscovered faults remain. These findings offer vital empirical evidence for software engineers who need to validate quality and assess risk in systems where failures carry severe operational consequences.

Rahul also co-authored The Fuzzing Book, an open educational resource that teaches automated test generation through runnable Python code. By enabling readers to experiment directly with executable examples and adapt chapters into lecture slides, the project links academic research with practical learning for students, educators and developers.
