Qinghua’s co-authored catalogue and risk-assessment research turn responsible-AI principles into practical guidance for software teams. CSIRO reports that the catalogue is used by industry and adopted by national AI initiatives, while an adapted question bank supports the NSW AI Assurance Framework. These resources help engineers and public-sector teams consider risks across development, system design and ongoing oversight.

Qinghua Lu is Group Leader and Senior Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO, leading the Software Systems Research Group and specialising in AI engineering, AI safety and responsible AI. Research and practitioner writing connect these fields with the everyday decisions involved in building dependable software, including the co-authored books Responsible AI: Best Practices for Creating Trustworthy AI Systems and Engineering AI Systems: Architecture and DevOps Essentials.

Qinghua co-authored the Responsible AI Pattern Catalogue, a collection of reusable practices for managing, developing and designing AI systems responsibly. The catalogue covers organisational oversight, development processes and product design, giving teams practical guidance throughout a system’s life to mitigate ethical risks that arise across both AI and non-AI components, from initial planning through to ongoing monitoring.

In public-sector assessment, an adapted version of the co-authored Responsible AI Question Bank for Risk Assessment was adopted into the NSW AI Assurance Framework. Alongside research, Qinghua shares engineering approaches through keynote speaking, including at the 2026 International Conference on Software Engineering.
