Mark has helped make model-based testing accessible to practitioners through Practical Model-Based Testing: A Tools Approach, supported by a substantial research record in testing and verification. Mark Utting is Associate Professor in Software Engineering at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, focusing on model-based testing and software verification. After completing a PhD exploring the meaning of object-oriented programming languages at the University of New South Wales, Mark held posts at universities across Queensland, New Zealand, and France. Industry experience developing genomics and manufacturing software and managing software development teams complements this scholarly background.

Mark co-authored Practical Model-Based Testing: A Tools Approach, creating a practitioner guide to generating tests from models, alongside publishing more than 80 papers on model-based testing, software verification, and programming language design and implementation. Current investigations explore stronger guarantees for AI-generated code, compilers, and smart contracts, as well as techniques for partially automating test design and execution. The resulting research gives engineers and testers practical methods to verify that complex software behaves as intended.
