Maria Garcia de la Banda

Maria contributes model analysis, debugging and profiling expertise to MiniZinc, helping users inspect models that describe rules and optimisation goals. This work supports people using the language to understand unexpected results and inefficient behaviour. Contributions to the open-source project bring practical quality support to software whose correctness depends on the model as well as the solver.

Maria Garcia de la Banda is an Emeritus and retired Professor at Monash University in Melbourne, where she spent 32 years researching constraint programming and co-developing MiniZinc before retiring in October 2026. As a member of the MiniZinc team, Maria has worked on analysing and transforming models, debugging errors, and profiling model behaviour to track where computation is spent. MiniZinc provides an open-source modelling language that allows users to formulate problems without being tied to a specific solver.

Maria also focused on symmetry detection and breaking, which identifies equivalent choices in a model and prevents repeated search. Connecting model design directly with software quality, this work provides tools to inspect and improve models when unexpected results or inefficient behaviour stem from the model itself.
