Liming co-developed practical guidance that connects responsible AI principles with everyday engineering decisions. The Responsible AI Pattern Catalogue gives people designing, building and governing AI systems reusable practices for addressing risks throughout development and operation. Related research has informed Australian government and industry assurance practices, helping organisations assess quality, safety and accountability across complete AI systems.

Liming Zhu is Research Director at CSIRO, a former Head of Data61, Australia’s national digital and AI research capability, and a conjoint professor at UNSW. Leadership across the organisation spans software engineering, trustworthy and safe artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. Key contributions include Australia’s voluntary AI safety standard and national AI assurance guidance, offering practical ways to assess whether AI systems are trustworthy and safe.

Liming co-authored the Responsible AI Pattern Catalogue, a collection of reusable practices for managing organisations, development processes and system design. The catalogue helps teams turn ethical principles into actionable decisions throughout an AI system’s lifecycle, from planning through to operation, treating quality as a system-wide responsibility across both AI and non-AI components. These insights have directly informed Australian government and industry assurance and impact assessment practices.

Books including Responsible AI: Best Practices for Creating Trustworthy AI Systems and Engineering AI Systems: Architecture and DevOps Essentials share these methodologies with practitioners. In 2023, Liming delivered the keynote “Software Engineering as the Linchpin of Responsible AI”, reinforcing the vital link between rigorous engineering discipline and responsible AI across the wider software community.
