Performance & Reliability

Why Julian Oes is in the Luvo 100

Julian has worked on MAVSDK since 2016 and co-maintains a shared library for developers building drone and robotics applications. By providing a simpler interface to vehicles using MAVLink, the project reduces repeated communication-handling code. Sustained open-source maintenance makes shared fixes available at a boundary where errors can affect the reliability of the wider system.

About

Julian Oes is an independent software engineering consultant and MAVSDK maintainer based in Auckland, New Zealand. Consultancy projects focus on drones and robotics alongside sustained contributions to open-source software. Having joined the PX4 autopilot project as a developer in 2012, Julian also contributes to MAVLink, a protocol used for vehicle communication.

Julian began developing MAVSDK in 2016 and continues to maintain the project alongside Jonas Vautherin. Initially supported by various companies, maintenance has more recently continued in spare time. MAVSDK gives applications a simpler interface to vehicles using MAVLink, reducing the bespoke communication-handling code each application must maintain. Shared interfaces and fixes strengthen software quality at the boundary between applications and vehicles, where communication errors can undermine dependable operation.
