Jieshan Chen

Jieshan connects interface research with practical software quality: UIED has been integrated into industrial interface-testing tools, while LabelDroid generates missing accessibility labels for mobile interfaces. This work supports testing teams and addresses barriers faced by people using mobile software. Research on deceptive designs, alongside teaching and conference service, extends that contribution to more usable and trustworthy systems.

Jieshan Chen is Senior Research Scientist and UI Intelligence Team Lead at CSIRO Data61 in Sydney, working across software engineering and human–computer interaction. Jieshan completed a PhD in computer science at the Australian National University in 2022, following a statistics degree at Sun Yat-Sen University and an AI and machine learning research internship at Apple.

In interface testing, Jieshan created UIED, an approach for detecting elements in graphical user interfaces that has been integrated into industrial testing tools. Another key contribution, LabelDroid, generates missing accessibility labels for mobile interfaces and received an ICSE 2020 Distinguished Paper award. Ongoing investigations span generating and repairing interface designs, improving mobile accessibility, and detecting deceptive patterns, linking software quality directly to usability and user trust.

Active across conference programme committees and teaching, Jieshan gave a guest lecture on software usability and accessibility at the Technical University of Munich in 2024, alongside a workshop keynote on helping users detect and prevent cyber threats through interface awareness.
