Huai Liu

Huai connects test design with the difficult task of finding the cause of a failure when a correct result is not readily available. Co-authored studies investigate improved fault localisation and checks on web-service response times, offering methods relevant to researchers, testers and engineers working with these challenges. The supported teaching project also brings human–AI teamwork into software engineering education.

Huai Liu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computing Technologies at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia. Huai focuses on adaptive random testing, metamorphic testing and fault localisation, connecting the practical challenges of selecting effective test inputs with tracing the root causes of failures.

Supported by an ARC grant, Huai investigates methods for localising sources of failure uncovered through metamorphic testing. Publications include an article in Information and Software Technology that weights code statements reached during related tests to improve fault localisation, as well as research applying metamorphic testing to detect response-time faults and configuration issues in web services. In parallel, an ACDICT learning and teaching grant supports a project examining how to teach and assess human–AI teamwork in software engineering studios.
