Why Eric Young is in the Luvo 100

Eric wrote the original SSLeay cryptographic implementation, which became a foundation for OpenSSL. Available for commercial and non-commercial use under its licence conditions, the library gave developers reusable software for secure communications. That foundational contribution matters to software quality because protecting communications is part of building secure applications, and OpenSSL continues to provide a toolkit for that work.

About

Eric Young co-created SSLeay, the cryptographic software from which OpenSSL developed. Based in Brisbane, Australia, Eric built the package to conform with Netscape’s SSL specifications, with original copyright notices covering 1995 to 1998 documenting this early implementation work.

SSLeay made secure communications broadly accessible as reusable software. Released under licence terms that permitted commercial and non-commercial use, modification and redistribution, the library gave developers a practical foundation for incorporating cryptographic functions into products. OpenSSL continues today as an essential toolkit for cryptography and secure communications, rooted in the application security groundwork Eric established for engineering teams.
