Damien Miller

Damien combines portable OpenSSH development and repository maintenance with release communication and technical teaching. This work supports administrators connecting to systems across operating systems, where secure access is essential to reliable operation. Public presentations and detailed release announcements also help engineering teams understand security changes and make informed maintenance decisions.

Damien Miller is an OpenSSH developer with the OpenSSH project, based in Melbourne, Australia. OpenSSH provides secure remote access for administering and connecting computer systems worldwide. Damien focuses on the portable implementation adapted to run on operating systems beyond OpenBSD, including Linux and macOS, and maintains the portable source-code repository to support environments with differing authentication mechanisms.

Technical education forms a longstanding part of this contribution. Damien delivered an SSH tutorial in 2002, spoke on secure software portability in 2005, and addressed OpenSSH security measures in 2007, followed by a 2024 presentation covering OpenSSH's past, present and future use of post-quantum cryptography.

In August 2026, Damien published the OpenSSH 10.5 release announcement, documenting security fixes and the team's transition to more frequent releases to deliver fixes sooner. This sustained combination of implementation, repository maintenance and public communication underpins the quality of critical remote-access software.
