Carsten Rudolph

Carsten contributes to software quality through security research, public code and teaching. As a co-author of SAFE, Carsten helped develop an approach to finding vulnerable code, with an implementation available for researchers and engineers to inspect and test. Teaching software security and leading national cybersecurity reviews extend that contribution into education and practical security planning.

Carsten Rudolph is Professor of Cybersecurity at Monash University in Melbourne. Holding a PhD in Information Security from Queensland University of Technology, awarded in 2002, Carsten pursues research across software security, the security of machine learning and formal methods. Investigations support secure solutions in areas including digital health and future energy networks.

Alongside Van Nguyen, Surya Nepal, Xingliang Yuan and Tingmin Wu, Carsten co-authored SAFE, an approach that enables AI models to use structural and semantic relationships in source code to detect vulnerabilities. Evaluated against eight comparison methods across three real-world datasets, SAFE demonstrated improved detection results, supported by a public implementation that researchers and engineers can inspect and test directly.

Teaching commitments at Monash include units in Software Security, IT Forensics, and introductory computer systems, networks and security. Beyond software research, Carsten leads reviews of national cybersecurity capabilities in the Pacific region in collaboration with Oxford University, connecting technical expertise with wider security policy.
