Aurélie Jacquet

Aurélie led the committee responsible for Australia’s adoption of guidance on unwanted bias in AI systems. The guidance gives organisations methods for assessing fairness and managing bias-related risks, making responsible AI principles more practical to apply. Committee leadership and public workshop participation also help businesses and government understand how standards support trustworthy software.

Aurélie Jacquet has served as Chair of the IT-043 Artificial Intelligence Committee at Standards Australia since December 2018. Holding graduate and postgraduate law degrees from France and Australia, alongside more than 18 years practising law in financial services, Aurélie moved into AI ethics after observing the global financial crisis and the regulatory response to algorithmic trading. A central ambition became developing internationally recognised good practice to help organisations deploy AI responsibly.

Under Aurélie’s leadership, IT-043 adopted SA TR ISO/IEC 24027:2022, guidance for identifying and managing unwanted bias in AI systems and AI-assisted decisions. The standard describes measurement techniques for assessing bias and fairness, offering organisations practical ways to put ethical principles into practice. These measures connect responsible AI directly with software quality by examining how systems make decisions and addressing risks that undermine trust.

Public education forms another major strand of this work. In May 2023, Aurélie joined a Standards Australia workshop panel explaining how AI standards support responsible development and reduce risk, addressing trust, privacy, security and data quality for an audience of businesses, industry representatives and government.
